Radar the Diving Dog

Radar the diving dog
There are those who might think that a pool-diving dog—gainers, cannonballs, back flips, forward somersaults with a twist—would be too effete, too pampered to be a true Boatyard Dog®. (The image is of jewel-encrusted drinking bowls and attendants with soft Turkish drying towels.) But not our boy Radar. His lineage is impeccable. A full-bore black Lab, his mother was the late Dory of Fisherman’s Wharf and his father is Tug of Lewes Harbour Marina, a hop, skip, and jump down the road from each other in Lewes, Delaware. One soft summer evening Tug moseyed on up the road and... well, we all know what happened next. The result of that clandestine rendezvous was a rather large pile of boatyard/marina puppies. Radar was among them. “Radar takes his heritage very seriously,” wrote owner Donna Floyd. “He began swimming when he was six weeks old. By five months he began diving in the pool to retrieve anything he could find on the bottom. Maybe we should have named him Sonar.” We’d like to see your Boatyard Dog® (ok, or cat)! Send photo and details to BYD, P.O. Box 566, Rockland, ME 04841, or click here to contact us through our website. We are pleased to announce a new collaboration with the folks at The Bark, “the magazine of modern dog culture.” They will send a free one-year subscription and a personalized copy of the book DogJoy to each of our featured summer BYDs.

The Bark will also be the media sponsor for the World Championship Boatyard Dog Trials during the Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show, August 12-14, 2011. (By the way, it’s not too late to enter your dog for a chance to compete in this zany event! Details at maineboats.com, click here.)
