Boats and Everything Under the Sun
When John K. Hanson, Jr. envisioned this magazine and its mission, he saw a celebration of Maine’s traditions and craftspeople, the splendor of the natural world, quality craftsmanship, and joyful experiences shared by community. It is all evident in his first editorial, reprinted below. One hundred and eighty-two editions of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors later, the words are as true and applicable as when he wrote them. John has spent countless hours in conversation talking about boats and everying under the sun, and the world is richer for it. With his retirement, he can enjoy as much time as he wants in his fleet of boats—sail, power, paddle, and iceboats—knowing that he has left a vast library of timeless articles and a lasting mark on Maine. Mission accomplished. Congratulations and happy retirement, John! See you on the water.

Letter From the Publisher
Autumn 1987, Issue #1
First, I’d like to thank all my friends up and down the coast for making possible this, the first issue of Maine Boats & Harbors. Without their support, this would still be one of my dreams, not a reality. Thank you all.
I live and work in one of the most beautiful places in the world, the coast of Maine. Besides great natural scenery, it’s the beauty and integrity of the people who live and work here that make it so special. Our geography, a land cut by bays and rivers, has forged a heritage that is deeply involved with boats. Consequently, some of the best boats in the world are built right here.
At Maine Boats & Harbors we want to share with you what we’ve learned about the coast, its boatbuilders, its craftsmen, its artists. We want to show you some of the more interesting places to explore, take you to quiet coves and bold headlands. Coastal Maine has special people, special boats, and special places whose praises for too long have gone unsung. We’re here to correct that.
