Small Adventures

Damariscove: Beguiling Isle

Once a bustling year-round community, Damariscove Island today is largely uninhabited. It is owned by the Boothbay Regional Land Trust, which welcomes visitors.

Eagle Island

Eagle Island in Casco Bay has some nice hiking trails as well as the former summer home of Arctic explorer Robert Peary.

Small Adventures: Kittery Foreside

While many people think of Kittery as outlet heaven, Maine’s southernmost town has a more charming historic side, with lovely old homes and a bustling downtown, centered around Wallingford Square.

Southwest Harbor

Far from Bar Harbor’s summer bustle, Southwest Harbor is known as Mt. Desert Island’s quiet side.

Biddeford Pool

Writer Mimi Steadman visits Biddeford Pool, a community of shingle-style cottages in Saco Bay. Named Winter Harbor by the Europeans who settled there in the 1600s, it should have been called Summer Harbor, because summer is when the town buzzes with activity.
