Sailing Adventures for Kids in Rockland

Monday, June 23rd 2025

Just in time for summer, Midcoast kids will have a new way to get out on the water to polish their sailing skills and learn some new ones. The Sail, Power, and Steam Museum is launching an Afternoon Adventurers’ Club, a weeklong program for sailors aged 9 to 16.

The program will be offered three times over the course of the summer and is suitable to graduates of the museum’s Sail Kids for Free (SKFF) or similar beginning learn-to-sail courses.

The cost for these lessons in seamanship, rigging, and the art and science of sailing will be $200; scholarships are available. Each week’s worth of lessons will run Monday to Friday, 1 to 4 p.m. Boats will include 420s, Sunfish, a Herreshoff 12 ½, and modern keelboats such as the J/22.

In announcing the Afternoon Adventures, Museum Executive Director Robin McIntosh noted, “There are so many kids in our area who don’t have ready access to the water, to lessons, to boats. It is truly a delight to watch these kids learn to sail while their skills and confidence on the water grow!”

She added, “Our programs are diverse and growing. “While many people are familiar with our SKFF program, we also offer more advanced youth programs, private lessons, and classes and clinics throughout the year. With our active boat shop on the shore of Rockland’s working waterfront, we are uniquely positioned to host sailing programs that reflect our mission to celebrate, honor, experience, and share the story of Maine’s maritime heritage.”
