Often seen frolicking on low-tide ledges while cruising downeast, Rose and Archie are indispensable crew members aboard Pinniped, a cutter-rigged Bruckmann 42-foot sloop, sailed by their people, Paul and Merf Allen. The boat’s summer harbor is Rockland, but the pups voyage far and wide. Rose is a 12-year-old shepherd mix and a seasoned veteran of adventuring on the coast of Maine. She is particularly fond of leaping from the dinghy and swimming ashore for walks, finding all sorts of unsavory things to munch on remote islands, and teaching her best pal, Archie, all about life aboard. Archie is a 5-year-old terrier mix who has turned his prey instincts to any bird trying to land on his boat. He patrols the deck waiting for aerial assaults and repels the winged intruders with impressive displays of running, jumping, and, of course, high-pitched barking. When not fending off attacks above decks, Archie digs into his stash of toys by the nav station and resumes his antics below. Off season, the pups become snow angels, romping on any ski slope their people visit. While Rose and Archie love cruising anywhere and everywhere in Maine, they agree that their favorite spot is The Hens at Seal Bay on Vinalhaven, where the tides, ledges, beaches and pinnipeds (seals) make for a true boatyard dog paradise.
