Dance with award-winning Canadian band Boogat
Hey there Amigos! Dig out your fedoras and dust off your dancing shoes. The Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show is bringing Boogat to Rockland. The five-piece Latin-flavored contemporary dance band will make its only Maine appearance on August 13, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. in a vintage warehouse on Winter Street. Tickets are $25, available online at maineboats.com/show. Advance online purchase includes free Saturday admission to the MBH&H Show. Event collaborators include the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Epifanes, and WERU-FM (media sponsor).

"Contemporary art covers a wide spectrum, and in my mind music is at the heart of it," said publisher and show producer John K. Hanson, Jr. "To highlight that, we teamed up with the Center for Maine Contemporary Art to bring in a band that spans a few horizons, culturally and geographically. In a nod back to Rockland's more industrial era, we've got them on stage in a warehouse on WInter Street, directly across the way from the brand-new CMCA building."

Born in Canada, with a father from Paraguay and a mother from Mexico, Boogat's heritage is distinctly Latin. He fronts a band that features live trumpet and trombone, percussion, drums, guitars, and vocals. Their music has been described as an "edgy blend of hip-hop, cumbia, reggaeton and other styles, seamlessly blending a variety of programmed and live instrumentation to accompany Boogat's forceful rapping."

The group will arrive in Rockland fresh from performances in San Francisco, Mexico City, and Toronto. Their tour of the Americas is to promote their newest release, "Neo-Reconquista," which won a Juno (a "Canadian Grammy") for World Music Album of the Year this spring. Boogat has opened for Nortec Collective, Quantic, Gilles Peterson, and Chromeo, among others, and has toured extensively, mainly in North America. Some of his songs have made their way to Hollywood, where they have been placed in the TV series "Homeland" and the film "The Forger" with John Travolta.
