Boatyard Dog® — Issue 152

Bode and Rocky

By The Editors

Bode

Balancing on a stand-up paddleboard can be tricky, especially with a dog on board. Don Russell got a new SUP for father’s day last year and was getting ready to put it away after an outing when his colleague Bode, an elderly German shorthaired pointer, casually climbed onboard and sat down to wait for a ride. The board had just enough room for both dog and man, who enjoyed the first of many shared outings. Bode, who turns 15 in May, eagerly participates in any and all boating activities from the family base on Freeport’s Flying Point, whether power or paddle—and is a seasoned kayaker. Don’s wife Pam commented, “Gotta love the old guys: they still have a zest for life!”

Rocky

An 11-year-old pit bull, Rocky is one of those dogs who would rather be boating than doing just about anything else. He especially enjoys going fishing with his “pets” on their 26' Century out of Hampton Beach because—forget about deep-sea fish like tuna—he would rather play with the bait. Rocky knows to lay down in rough seas and how to celebrate when a fish has been landed. Although he doesn’t actually take the helm, he still considers himself captain.
