June 10, 2010: Portland The Refuge - Cocktail Party & Art Auction to benefit Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland The Refuge - Cocktail Party & Art Auction is the one event dedicated to raising money to provide quality medical care to the animals of the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARL). Every year, the ARL takes in more than 4,000 stray, abandoned or owner surrendered pets from 15 communities, many of whom require medical treatment. Following last year’s inaugural event, this year is sure to be even better, featuring great music, fantastic food, amazing art and much more from local artists and businesses within our community. The Portland Company is home to the event - an open loft space where guests can mingle, enjoy cocktails and hors d’ouevres while perusing the silent auction – bidding to collect unique works of art and other items that will support animals in need. 5:30 - 9:00 pm. 58 Fore St. arlgp.org June 10, 2010: Rockland An Evening of Free Sailing and Boating in Rockland Harbor - Second Thursdays at The Apprenticeshop The Apprenticeshop opens its doors and shores to invite the public for an evening of free sailing and rowing on Rockland Harbor. Visitors will have the opportunity to try a variety of small boats and tour all three floors of the boatbuilding shop. Between boat rides, a campfire on the beach and toasting marshmallows for s’mores round out this fun-for-the-whole-family program. No prior experience required, life jackets will be available and visitors will be matched with experienced yachtsmen. Those interested should come dressed for the weather. The event is part of the monthly series, Second Thursdays at The Apprenticeshop with a special gathering time of 6:00 pm. The Apprenticeshop, a school for traditional boatbuilding and seamanship, is located at 643 Main Street in Rockland, and offers a variety of courses for both adults and children in boatbuilding and sailing. Events will include the pirates arriving by boat, "rampaging" through a Pirate Bazaar at Schooner Landing, and then "pillaging" the in-town area. Accompanying them will be musicians, re-enactors, story-tellers and other entertainers who will circulate throughout the in-town area. June 12-13, Rockland Hunt Days at Trident Yacht Basin Come join the crew from Hunt Yachts and local Hunt agent Yachting Solutions at Trident Yacht Basin on the Rockland waterfront. The event runs Saturday and Sunday June 12-13, and focuses on sea trials of current models of Hunt Yachts. A good number of Hunts are scheduled to be available for sea trials (captains included if need be). There will be three Surfhunters present: a center-console 25, a soft-top 25, and a hard-top 33. The Harrier 25 and 29 will also be at the docks, as well as a selection of pre-owned Hunt vessels. All are welcome – Hunt fans old and new, current and prospective Hunt owners, plus owners of Hunt-built or Hunt-designed boats from the past 50-some years. So fire up your Surfhunter, Concordia, classic 1970s Hiliner, or even that 13-foot Boston Whaler, and cruise on over to Rockland Harbor to see what Hunt Yachts is up to these days. June 19, 2010: Thomaston A Celebration of the St. George River The Georges River Land Trust (GRLT) will raise funds for their efforts with A Celebration of the St. George River at Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding. This major fundraising event will support GRLT’s conservation projects from Montville near the river’s headwaters to its estuary in Port Clyde. The event will offer activities to highlight some of the main conservation themes for the St. George River. A tour of the Lyman-Morse facility led by Cabot Lyman will focus on the economic vitality along the river corridor. Dr. Arthur Spiess, state archaeologist, will discuss life along the river thousands of years ago as revealed in recently discovered artifacts. A boat tour narrated by Don Reimer will showcase the river’s natural habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, and other wildlife. Guests at this gala event will be treated to a summer buffet of local foods, wine and beer, and music by Tom Judge, Susan Groce, and the Occasionals. Tickets for the celebration are $75 and must be purchased by June 10th. GRLT will raffle a Björn Runquist painting, Hayfields in South Thomaston, 2007. Only 35 tickets for $100 each will be sold for this beautiful original 25” x 25” oil on canvas painting.
