"An Artist's Sense of Place”, Maine Painter, Evelyn Dunphy
Meet artist Evelyn Dunphy, whose watercolors of the Maine landscape will be on view at Frontier throughout February. Dunphy has been recognized by the Trust for Public Lands for her contribution to the largest conservation project in Maine history that expanded Baxter State Park by saving Katahdin Lake and 6,000 acres from development. She recently received the People's Choice Award from the Natural Resource Council of Maine. The film "Following in the Footsteps of Frederic Church," which follows Dunphy through a painting workshop at Church's Millinocket Lake camp, will be shown at 5:30 pm. 5pm-6:30pm. Free. February 4, 2010: Portland World-Renowned Soweto Gospel Choir Performs at Portland Bull Moose & Merrill Auditorium Members of the Grammy award-winning South African gospel group the Soweto Gospel Choir will perform a live in-store concert Thursday, February 4 at noon at the Portland Bull Moose at 151 Middle Street. Scheduled in conjunction with Portland Ovations who will be presenting a full concert of the Soweto Gospel Choir at Merrill Auditorium at 7:00 pm that evening, the free in-store concert will feature ten members performing three songs a capella followed by a CD signing. Formed in Soweto, South Africa in 2002, the 30+ member ensemble blends elements of African gospel, reggae, and American popular music. Food Pantry and the Humane Society of Knox County, this effort strives to educate the public about need in our community. Representatives from both the A.I.O. Food Pantry and the Humane Society of Knox County will be on hand on accept donations and to answer questions and C.A.R.T. (County Animal Response Team), the Knox County Emergency Management Agency, and the Knox Regional Communications Center 9-1-1 Public Education Unit will be there with information for the public. Don Carrigan, reporter for WLBZ 2 and WCSH 6, will be attending with the infamous Togus the Cat. Humane Society of Knox County "Wish List": kitty litter, paper towels, large black garbage bags, dog treats, cat treats, large rawhide chews and bones, postage stamps, 6 inch paper plates. AIO Food Pantry "wish list": dish detergent, laundry detergent, canned milk, juice, creamed corn, paper towels, toilet paper, cereal, shampoo, body wash. February 6, 2010: Rockport Snowman Triathlon This indoor/outdoor Triathlon includes a half-mile pool swim, 30 min. stationary bike ride and 5K run. There will be free t-shirts for the first 50 registrants. Prizes and refreshments are included. Entrance fee is $45 prior to January 30/$50 after. Saturday, 9:00 am, Pen Bay YMCA, Union St. 236-3375. February 5 -7, 2010: Camden 20th Annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships The U.S. National Toboggan Championships is still seeking sponsors as organizers prepare for this year's races at the Camden Snow Bowl. A unique tradition in Maine, and the only official, traditional wooden toboggan races in the country, the U.S. National Toboggan Championships are geared up for some gorgeous Maine winter weather, which will undoubtedly yield fast racing times and plenty of enthusiastic spectators. Annually a sell-out for the 400 available team slots, the Toboggan Nationals also bring approximately 5,000 fans to the area for the two days of racing, with Friday's prep day a local business boon for those traveling to the Midcoast from out of the area. The funds raised will benefit the children and their families treated at the Maine Children's Cancer Program. The Shaw's Polar Dip is a cornerstone event in the Sebago Lake Rotary Derby Fest, the third largest ice fishing event in the country. This year we are expecting more than 200 brave souls to jump into the four-foot deep hole cut into the ice on Sebago Lake. To enter, each jumper solicits pledges from friends, family and their communities to help meet the vital needs of children battling cancer. The exhibition draws on the museum’s collection of nineteenth century clothing and accessories including day and evening attire, nightgowns, undergarments, hats and shoes, fans, and jewelry dating from 1850 to 1900. “Strings At Sea” Portland Symphony Orchestra Kinderkonzert
The Portland Symphony Orchestra’s beloved Kinderkonzert series presents “Strings at Sea”, introducing young children to instrument families and musical concepts.
