New Editorial Team at Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, Inc. ROCKLAND, ME — Company founder John K. Hanson, Jr., has announced that award-winning writer and editor Polly Saltonstall has been named Editor in Chief of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, Inc., the 26-year-old magazine publisher, event organizer, and online enterprise. Saltonstall will replace Peter H. Spectre, an internationally respected marine writer and editor who is retiring after 15 years as Executive Editor of the magazine, and 45 years in publishing. “Peter’s vision, sense of humor, and editorial style gave Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine a distinctive voice that found an appreciative audience all over the country," said Hanson. Spectre will continue to write and consult for the magazine from his home in Spruce Head. Joining Saltonstall in a leadership position as Managing Editor will be Jennifer Wilson McIntosh, who has been at the company for 13 years, and as Associate Editor since 2004. "Over the years, Jennifer has proven that she has a poetic sensibility and is an excellent project manager," said Hanson. Gretchen Piston Ogden is stepping down from the role this fall after 14 years, and plans to start her own writing and editing business. “Gretchen steered the magazine with grace and humor, and always maintained a very high standard of writing, photography, and design,” said Hanson. “Luckily for us, she will remain with the company as a consultant.” During the past 26 years, Maine Boats, Home & Harbors, Inc., has evolved into a multifaceted company. In addition to the award-winning, 26-year-old magazine, the Rockland, Maine-based organization has produced the acclaimed annual Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show for 11 years, and has two web sites: maineboats.com and usharbors.com. Earlier this year the company launched a digital edition of the print magazine and introduced a new digital magazine titled Life on the Coast. “Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, Inc. has matured into a communications company that operates on many platforms,” said Hanson. “Polly has a multi-disciplined mind and is ideal to lead Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, Inc.’s editorial departments and further integrate the various components, which will let each one shine even more brightly.” Saltonstall has 30 years of experience writing and editing newspapers, magazines, and books. Her work has been published in the New York Times, Cooking Light Magazine, WoodenBoat, Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, and the Bangor Daily News, among others. She has covered maritime history and the New England waterfront for many years, including debates over groundfishing regulations, the Maine lobster fishery, and aquaculture. “I am excited to join a magazine of such a high caliber and look forward to continuing to celebrate Maine, its coast, its people, its traditions, and its future,” said Saltonstall, who lives in Camden. Her newspaper background includes working as senior reporter at The Standard Times in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where her coverage of the city’s drug problems won national writing awards. She covered the Maine State Legislature for Central Maine Newspapers; was editor at large for Courier Publications; and previously was editor in chief of two Maine weeklies: The Republican Journal in Belfast and the Bar Harbor Times. A graduate of Harvard College, Saltonstall also worked as a reporter at the Anniston Star in Alabama and for the Associated Press in Nashville, Tenn. She holds a Masters degree in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Saltonstall currently sits on the boards of the Penobscot Marine Museum, which she chaired for a decade, and the Maine Community Foundation. She chairs the board of the Camden Public Library. Jennifer W. McIntosh spent five years at KMWorld magazine, a trade publication in Camden where she was Managing Editor, prior to joining Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors in 2000. She graduated from Colby College in 1995 with a B.A. in English and a minor in Women’s Studies. A Maine native with a strong appreciation of place and history, McIntosh grew up in the Lincolnville homestead of her maternal great-grandmother and heard stories of her seafaring family. “One of the things that originally drew me to the magazine was the opportunity it provided to pay homage to the long maritime tradition in my own family. My great-grandfather was a sea captain who sailed out of Camden on the steam yacht Satilla in the early 1900s, a great-uncle traveled the world on boats, and my grandfather lobstered from a wherry,” said McIntosh. “I also have a great reverence for the natural world, for words and art, and for a well-told story that engages, teaches, and inspires. Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors honors all of those things, and it is rewarding to be part of a quality product that supports our craftspeople and represents the special diversity of life along the coast.” The entire crew will be at the 2013 Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show, August 9-11 on the Rockland waterfront.
