The Maine I Love—Photographs by Sean Graves, Mark Pillsbury, and Jennifer McIntosh

As a hobby photographer, I love documenting my family’s daily adventures in Maine. Whether it’s a bald eagle by the Oyster River, a shiny blue mud wasp on a milkweed plant in the yard, or my daughter running across the grass on Beech Hill during a short hike, this state provides so many opportunities to experience life beyond our little farmhouse in Warren. I love to find unique details in what seems like an everyday scene.

Wherever I go in Maine, I try to bring a camera along because I’ve come to expect the unexpected: The contrasting colors of a tree-lined rocky shore; the horizon, where sky and water meet; old machinery left out to rust. Often I see a strong sense of place, especially in rural Maine, and pictures are a lasting reminder of those much-appreciated surprises along the way.

The natural world provides such inspiration, a reason to look closely and move slowly, and a chance to play with colors, shape, and movement. Every season offers up a different pallet, with varied textures and materials. I love to capture the compositions formed by nature, and those I form myself using berries, petals, pine needles, leaves, and other fallen-to-the-ground items, ready to briefly become something new.
