There are those who might think that a pool-diving dog—gainers, cannonballs, back flips, forward somersaults with a twist—would be too effete, too pampered to be a true Boatyard Dog®. (The image is of jewel-encrusted drinking bowls and attendants with soft Turkish drying towels.) But not our boy Radar. His lineage is impeccable.
A full-bore black Lab, his mother was the late Dory of Fisherman’s Wharf and his father is Tug of Lewes Harbour Marina, a hop, skip, and jump down the road from each other in Lewes, Delaware. One soft summer evening Tug moseyed on up the road and... well, we all know what happened next. The result of that clandestine rendezvous was a rather large pile of boatyard/marina puppies. Radar was among them.
“Radar takes his heritage very seriously,” wrote owner Donna Floyd. “He began swimming when he was six weeks old. By five months he began diving in the pool to retrieve anything he could find on the bottom. Maybe we should have named him Sonar.”
