Maine I Love—Ed Kenney

“The idea for a book with a portfolio of winter photographs has been on my mind for several years, and it will come to fruition in mid-2021 with the publication of The Winter Coast of Maine by Seapoint Books. Maine offers a stunning landscape in all seasons, and it could be argued, never more so than in winter. The late autumnal landscape that is first laid bare, then covered with a blanket of snow, reveals a beauty that visitors and summer residents rarely see. Temperatures range from temperate to frigid, and days can be pristine and calm—or downright ferocious. At its core, photography is about capturing the light. The wide-ranging atmospheric conditions of coastal Maine and the low angle of the winter sun create scenes that beg to be photographed. There is an old saying: “There’s no such thing as bad weather—just poor wardrobe choices.” After leaving a warm house with my cameras over several years to capture the essence of a Maine winter, I would posit that only the second half of the cliché is true. But one person’s bad weather can be a gift to a photographer willing to venture out and experience it.”
