The Maine I Love — Kelli Park

“As an artist, I am most naturally drawn to wild places with a strong sense of identity. As a storyteller, I am interested in how individuals develop relationships with their natural surroundings. I recently created Due North Project, documenting the culture of Maine’s working waterfront and what it means to have salt in your veins. The concept of duality in our connection with the ocean is important in my work: the way the tides change daily, but consistently; the way individuals in island communities are both fiercely independent and strongly interconnected; the way fishermen struggle to preserve their heritage, while evolving within today’s world; and the way the ocean isolates and connects us to faraway places.” Kelli Park lived all over the country before ending up in Harpswell, Maine, which she says has more coastline than any other town in the country. She can think of nothing better.
