Kassie: A Yachtyard Dog

Brittany spaniels aren’t particularly known as water dogs—they’re pointers, favored primarily for upland bird hunting—but Kassie, a Brittany belonging to Kem and Carol Siddons, spends quite a bit of time on the water, if not in it. Twelve years old and as chipper as ever, she spends her winters in Jacksonville, Florida, and her summers in Brooklin, where she is reputed to be the unofficial Yachtyard Dog for the Center Harbor Yacht Club. While a bird dog at heart, she loves to roam the docks around Center Harbor and, whenever possible, go rowing or sailing. She has even ventured out in a kayak a time or two. An early riser, she joins Carol on walks along the shore from the family cottage and helps her sniff out sea glass. Her big adventure last summer was getting to roam around Marshall Island while visiting Stuart, the Siddons’s oldest son, who worked there as island caretaker. Kassie is definitely a Mainer at heart and an integral part of the summer boating life in Brooklin.

As part of a collaboration with the folks at The Bark magazine, Kassie and her people will receive a free one-year subscription and a personalized copy of the book DogJoy. The Bark will be the media sponsor for the lighthearted World Championship Boatyard Dog Trials Sunday morning during the Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show, August 12-14, 2011. It’s a wild and zany event—details HERE. (Sorry, entries for the trials are closed, and NO other pets will be allowed on show grounds. Please leave them home to avoid disappointment.)
