Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Announces Winner of the “People’s Choice” Boatyard Dog Award
Top Boats in Maine
ROCKLAND, Maine: New to the World Championship Boatyard Dog® Trials at the Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show this year was the “People’s Choice” award. Audience members cast monetary votes for their favorite competing canine in this fundraiser for two local shelters—the Humane Society of Knox County and the Camden-Rockport Animal Rescue League. The money raised was matched by Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, split, and presented to the two area shelters. Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors is pleased to announce Hazel as the winner of the 2010 People’s Choice award. The eight-year-old black lab, who hails from Rockport, swims in the ocean daily, and is a frequent visitor at Woodlands Nursing Home. She was the matron of the competitors’ pool and delivered an excellent showing in the competition itself. While Hazel didn’t take home the “Pup Cup” perpetual trophy, she did capture the hearts of show-goers with her upbeat attitude, earning the honor of being the first People’s Choice award winner. Hazel’s handler Ron Staschak said, “We’re so glad that the people supported Hazel.” Staschak also conveyed Hazel’s sentiments: “I feel a great sense of pride to know that I have helped raise money for the shelters, and appreciate the big ‘paws up’ from the crowd.” Publisher and show producer John K. Hanson, Jr. commented: “Boatyard dogs have always been a part of the waterfront and are featured in each and every issue of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine in the Boatyard Dog® column. We are happy to support the good work of the area shelters who provide care and placement services for the canine community.” “The Humane Society of Knox County was thrilled to be a part of this year’s Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show,” said Tracy Sala, the shelter’s executive director. “It was a great opportunity to get our message out to the public and get exposure for the shelter animals that are waiting to be adopted into homes. We appreciate the wonderful support from the MBH&H staff and the public that attended the event, and we look forward to participating next year.” Sarah Shepherd, executive director of the Camden-Rockport Animal Rescue League said, “The shelter is very appreciative of the financial donation and support. We also enjoy having a booth at the show each year, which gives great community exposure for the shelter and for the kittens that are featured at our booth. There were even some adoptions as a result of this event. Thank you again!” Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, "The Magazine of the Coast," is celebrating its twenty-third year.
