ROCKLAND, Maine – Beautiful boats, unique handcrafted products, and a sparkling summer scene will fill the Rockland waterfront and park August 12-14, 2011, when hundreds of vendors join Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine for its annual boat and coastal lifestyle show. The only in-the-water event of its kind in the state, the Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show is known for an eclectic mix of high-quality goods for life on the water and the shore. Some of the finest examples of Maine-built boats from rowing craft and kayaks to sailboats and poweryachts will be gathered together, as well as marine supplies, fine furnishings and home wares, art and jewelry, and sustainable energy products. “In the course of an afternoon, show goers can literally design an entire life,” said John K. Hanson, Jr., founder of the magazine and the show. “You can hire an architect, a home builder, and a solar provider, add furnishings and fixtures, pick out a boat, and drive away on your new electric scooter while the sounds of a ukulele band fill the air.” The show’s collection of handcrafted essentials for coastal life reflects the traditions and styles of Maine’s past, the innovation of today, and the emerging technologies that are shaping our future. For that reason, the editorial component of the show annually explores a different element of how “Tradition Shapes Innovation.” The focus for 2011 will be on coastal life circa 1936 from industry and enterprise to art, music, film and fashion, inspired in part by the 75th anniversaries of both the Penobscot Marine Museum and the Maine Windjammer Fleet. Historical elements and images of Rockland and the coast from the PMM collection will capture the essence of the era, and exhibits will trace the influences of that time on the products of today. There will be vintage cars, antique canoes and ice boats, classic sail and powerboats, plus films from Northeast Historic Film and other local historians. As ever, the show will offer a diverse mix of live music, local food, and the ever-zany crowd favorite: the World Championship Boatyard Dog® Trials (Sunday, August 14, 10:30 a.m.). A few choice slots are still open to crazy canine competitors, so any interested and well-behaved hopefuls are encouraged to submit a letter of interest and a flattering image by June 30, 2011 to byd@maineboats.com. See www.maineboats.com for entry details.
